Characters

Karina: 

1. Karina is an undocumented Filipina in New Jersey who survives by helping run a human smuggling network for other Filipina workers.
2. She charges desperate women brutal fees, but also feeds them, protects them, comforts them, and treats them like family.
3. Her great dream is to reunite with her son Richard in the United States, believing America will give them both a second chance.
4. Richard is not an easy child to save. He is troubled, rebellious, and drifting toward delinquency, which makes Karina question whether her sacrifices are worth it.
5. Karina lives in constant fear of ICE raids, police attention, Luis’s temper, and the possibility that one mistake could destroy everything.
6. She is exhausted from work, guilt, secrecy, and the emotional labor of taking care of everyone while no one truly takes care of her.
7. Her escape is romance novels, Filipino food, Tagalog conversation, and the brief fantasy that tenderness still exists somewhere in her life.
8. Through Axel, she glimpses the America she both desires and resents: rich, sexy, careless, seductive, and morally rotten.
9. Her friendships with Molly and Corrine awaken her conscience because she sees women being deceived, used, and hurt, just as she is deceiving and using others.
10. Karina’s real plight is that every choice costs her something: money, safety, dignity, friendship, innocence, or the dream of becoming a good mother again.

Axel:

1. Axel is a rich, young, all-American musician whose charm, body, money, and confidence make him feel like Karina’s fantasy version of America come to life. 

2. He is friendly, disarming, generous, and emotionally open with Karina, which makes his selfishness more dangerous because he never feels like a cartoon villain.

3. He gives Karina money, work, gifts, and access to a world far above her own, but every favor pulls her deeper into moral compromise.

4. His relationships with Molly and Corrine expose his rot: he wants affection, admiration, sex, and comfort, but he does not want accountability.

5. To Karina, Axel becomes both lifeline and warning sign: America can be beautiful, seductive, and generous, but also careless, corrupt, and impossible to trust.

MOLLY

1. Molly is a young Filipina Tagalog speaker who immediately brings out Karina’s softer, sisterly, and motherly instincts.

2. She is in love with Axel, but her innocence makes Karina painfully aware that Axel’s charm can destroy people who trust too easily.

3. Molly’s bond with Karina works because they share language, culture, humor, and homesickness in a world where both are emotionally displaced. 

4. Her possible attraction to Rommel gives Karina a chance to quietly save her without openly betraying Axel.

5. Molly represents the younger Filipina woman Karina wants to protect, but also the kind of woman Karina may have once been before survival hardened her.

CORRINE

1. Corrine is a successful divorced American single mother who seems to have everything Karina lacks: money, legal security, comfort, and social power. 

2. Her bond with Karina comes through motherhood, loneliness, and romantic disappointment.

3. Corrine’s love for Axel exposes how even privileged women can be emotionally vulnerable and foolish.

4. To Karina, Corrine is both alien and familiar: rich and white, but still a woman trying to be loved and not discarded.

5. Corrine’s eventual heartbreak should be one of Karina’s deepest guilt points because Karina knew more than she said.

LUIS

1. Luis is Karina’s Filipino co-conspirator in the human smuggling operation, but he is colder, more predatory, and less sentimental than she is.

2. He treats undocumented workers as business assets, while Karina still sees them as people, which makes him her darkest mirror.

3. Luis represents what Karina could become if she kills off her conscience completely.

4. His pressure forces Karina to confront the lie that she can exploit people and still call herself their protector.

5. Luis should not just be a villain. He should be the brutal voice of survival capitalism: pay up, shut up, keep moving, or get crushed.
